Company Description

Zymeworks is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of next-generation bispecific and multifunctional biotherapeutics, initially focused on the treatment of cancer. Zymeworks’ suite of complementary therapeutic platforms and its fully-integrated drug development engine provide the flexibility and compatibility to precisely engineer and develop highly-differentiated product candidates.

Zymeworks is seeking a highly-motivated professional who is looking to grow their career with our company.

This position will report to the Scientist, Protein Engineering and will be based in Vancouver, BC.

As a condition of employment, Zymeworks requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and provide verification of such.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designs, implements, and executes scientific research and development projects in collaboration with a larger research team.
  • Leads all protein production efforts, prioritizes work based on company and project goals.
  • Manages junior staff to develop scientific knowledge and wet-lab skills.
  • Records experimental data and writes study reports.
  • Reviews experimental process and data with Supervisor, and/or coworkers as appropriate.
  • Presents the progress of experiments to others.
  • Responsible for coordinating interdepartmental activities and research efforts.
  • Contributes to scientific literature and conferences.
  • Fosters effective and collaborative working relationships with fellow employees and management.
  • Liaises with laboratory personnel and CRO staff to follow-up on the protein expression and screening for biophysical and bioactivity of the engineered molecules.
  • Develop and optimize new protocols and technology.

Qualifications and Education

Masters in a Scientific Discipline (Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular or Cellular Biology or related field), and a minimum of 4+ years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Highly experienced in mammalian protein expression systems including characterization techniques such as Octet, SDS-PAGE.
  • Knowledge and/or skills of downstream protein production activities including purification, analytics such as UPLC/SEC, CE-SDS, SPR, LC/MS.
  • Knowledge and/or skills of molecular biology including vector design, plasmid preparation, NGS.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Experience in liquid handling automation, robotics, and high-throughput workflows.
  • Meticulous organization, record keeping and reporting.
  • Maintenance of inventory, request management systems, and Gantts when required.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, incorporating integrity in all decision making.
  • Ability to manage concurrent deliverables and work effectively in a challenging, milestone-driven environment.
  • Effective oral and technical/scientific writing skills.
