SAN FRANCISCO, Calif, Sept 30, 2024 Life Science Cares Bay Area (LSC-BA), a collective and organic effort of the local Life Science industry to partner with nonprofits to disrupt the cycle of poverty and inequality, is thrilled to announce $800,000 in grants to 14 community nonprofits as part of its annual grantmaking. Addressing both immediate and long-term impacts of poverty and inequality, grantee organizations represent a geographical distribution spanning San Francisco as well as the East Bay, North Bay, and Peninsula/South Bay.

This year’s Life Sciences Cares Bay Area cohort of grantees includes ALAS, Biotech Partners, Breakthrough SF, First Tee, Girls Crushing It, GLIDE, Hack the Hood, HealthRight360, Larkin Street Youth Services, Mental Health Association of San Mateo, North Marin Community Services, PIE Fest, Scientific Adventures for Girls and Upward Scholars. All 14 partners are receiving renewal grants in 2024 from Life Science Cares Bay Area.

“This year has been a year of economic turmoil for many of our partners, corporate and nonprofits alike,” said Aisha Baro, Executive Director, Life Science Cares Bay Area. “This is the exact right time to press the pedal on our grant-giving. More than ever, our nonprofit partners need us, and we have maintained our ambitious goal of increasing our support in the community.”

Life Science Cares Bay Area is in a unique position as both a fundraising and grantmaking organization. The team hopes to meet its fundraising goals for 2024 so it can give out up to an additional $500,000 in 2024 for a total of $1.3 million in grants in 2024 and continue its year-over-year expansion in its grant-giving.

Life Science Cares expanded to the Bay Area in 2021, joining affiliates in San Diego and Philadelphia as well as the Greater Boston Life Science Cares flagship. Since its inception in 2016, Life Science Cares has been on a mission to leverage the intellectual, financial, and human capital of the life sciences industry to reduce the effects of poverty in local communities. The organization’s success reflects its ability to connect the capable and resourceful leaders and employees of local life science and affiliated companies with local communities of need to address the critical issues of survival, education, and economic sustainability.

“Our most impactful partnerships identify challenges or needs and find resources within the life science industry to overcome those challenges,” said Mark McClung who chairs Life Science Cares Bay Area’s partnerships committee “Today’s cohort of partner organizations brings an impressive track record of success in providing effective and efficient resources and relief to our Bay Area neighbors impacted by poverty.”

Life Science Cares leverages the power of the life science industry to solve one of our most intractable social issues—poverty. Currently operating in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area, Life Science Cares is a turnkey CSR program for the life science industry and a model through which other professional industries can leverage their time, talent and treasure to make a lasting impact.
