Its three major public universities are the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah State University at Logan and Weber State University at Ogden. The largest private school is Brigham Young University (BYU), which is operated by the LDS Church.

University of Utah is a major research institution with an average increase in research funding of 59 percent per faculty member since 1992. The School of Medicine encourages active research collaboration across university boundaries, with cutting-edge research conducted at a number of facilities including Eccles Institute of Genetics, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Utah Genome Center.

The university's Technology Commercialization Project and its Research Park are advancing technology innovation and transfer that generated almost $600 million in sales while adding 6,000 jobs to the state's economy in 1999.

At Utah State University, the Utah State Biotechnology Center promotes research and operates core resource service laboratories and supports technology development and transfer. Its Bioprocess Facility helps academic and industrial clients find solutions to research and development problems.

The Utah State Crop Physiology Lab is a leader in plant biology research, optimizing the growth of agricultural crops, and bio-regenerative life support systems. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the primary source of research funding for this lab.

Utah State ranks first in the nation in the amount of research dollars generated per faculty member.

BYU and the Utah State Historical Society in Salt Lake City house large collections of Mormon literature, and the LDS Church library in Salt Lake City holds one of the world's largest collections of genealogical records and research.
